Home › Luxury Phinisi Yacht Construction — Private Owner Commissions
A luxury phinisi is the same honest timber hull as a dive liveaboard — but arranged, finished and equipped around one owner rather than a full guest manifest. It is a private yacht with the soul of a Bugis sailing vessel: the two-masted rig , the ironwood and hardwood hull , and a level of joinery you would expect from a bespoke yacht.
Designed around the owner
A private commission usually means fewer, larger cabins — a full-beam owner’s suite, a small number of guest or family cabins, generous saloon and deck spaces, and a layout that puts light and view where the owner spends time. Because it is not chasing a cabin count, the general arrangement has room for a proper galley, stowage and crew quarters. See how layout is developed on the naval architecture page.
Yacht-grade systems and finish
Luxury is mostly the things you do not see. Quiet, well-isolated engines and generators ; marine air-conditioning sized for the tropics; a stable, clean electrical system with inverter and solar; and watermaking and tankage for real autonomy. Above that sits the finish: teak and hardwood joinery, stone and leather where the owner wants them, and hardware chosen to last in salt air.
Built to class, finished by hand
A private yacht still earns its class certificate. We engineer the vessel to BKI standards with stability calculations and a full sea trial, then finish it by hand at the Bira yards . If you may one day charter the yacht, we can specify it so the option stays open — see build-to-invest .
Sound, vibration and the quiet boat
The clearest marker of a luxury build is silence. Well-isolated engines and generators , floating floors, insulated bulkheads and thoughtful ducting keep the owner’s spaces quiet at anchor and under way. Achieving that in a timber hull takes engineering from the design stage, not acoustic treatment bolted on at the end.
Materials and the tropical climate
Luxury materials have to survive the tropics. Leather, stone, fine joinery and metalwork are chosen and detailed for humidity, salt and UV, so the interior still looks right after years in service. A finish that photographs beautifully but fails in two seasons is not luxury; durability is part of the definition.
Keeping the charter option open
Many private owners want the option to charter occasionally, to offset running costs. Building to commercial class and specifying a layout that works for guests as well as the owner keeps that door open without compromising the private experience. It is far cheaper to build the option in than to retro-fit it — see build-to-invest .
