A phinisi may be built by hand from timber, but below decks it is a modern vessel. Owners expect reliable power, cold food, hot showers, air-conditioning and a watermaker — and a dive boat expects all of that plus compressors, running all day in a remote anchorage. The craft is fitting these systems cleanly and quietly into a wooden hull, engineered from the design stage rather than squeezed in later.
Propulsion
The main engine is a marine diesel sized to the hull and the speed the vessel needs to keep — single on many cruising boats, twin where redundancy or manoeuvring matters. It sits on a fabricated engine bed tied into the structure, with the shaft aligned to the coupling, and the propeller sized to the engine and hull. The rudder stock and steering gear are specified to match.
Power and electrical
- One or more diesel generators sized for the hotel and dive load.
- A DC system (12V/24V) with a battery bank for house and engine.
- An AC system with shore power and an inverter for silent overnight running.
- Solar panels and charge control to cut generator hours.
- A monitored battery bank and inverter for clean, quiet power.
Tankage and water
Fuel and fresh-water tanks are sized against the longest legs the vessel will run — critical for the remote itineraries in dive liveaboard operation . A reverse-osmosis watermaker gives real autonomy; black-water and grey-water systems are specified to meet discharge rules, especially inside national parks.
Comfort and deck machinery
Marine air-conditioning is sized for the tropics and zoned so cabins stay comfortable without overloading the generators. On deck, hydraulic or electric windlasses and winches handle the anchor, mooring and — on a big rig — the sails , so a modest crew can work a large vessel safely. All of it is installed with access for maintenance, because a system you cannot reach is a system you cannot fix at sea.
Reliability by design
The measure of a well-engineered phinisi is what happens on day six of a remote charter. Redundancy on the systems that matter, clean wiring runs, labelled panels and honest access are specified into the build and checked at the sea trial .
Redundancy where it counts
Not every system needs a backup, but the ones that strand you do. Twin engines or a strong get-home capability, redundant generators , duplicated bilge pumping and independent charging paths are specified for the vessels and itineraries that need them. Redundancy costs weight and money, so it is applied deliberately — to the systems whose failure ends a charter, not to everything.
Fuel, range and the honest number
Range is a function of tankage, hull efficiency and how hard you push. We calculate it against real itineraries and specify fuel tankage with a genuine reserve, not a best-case number. For remote charter grounds that reserve is the difference between a relaxed passage and an anxious one.
Electronics and the helm
Navigation, communications and monitoring live at the wheelhouse : chartplotter and radar, AIS, VHF and satellite communications, engine and tank monitoring, and the alarms that give early warning of trouble. These are specified for the waters the vessel works and installed with tidy, serviceable wiring — the same discipline that governs the rest of the systems.
