Class, Compliance & Sea Trial — Building to Standard

Home › Class, Compliance & Sea Trial — Building to Standard

A boat that carries paying guests is not just built well — it is built to a standard, and can prove it. For a phinisi that means classification, commercial compliance, stability that has been calculated and tested, and a sea trial that is documented rather than assumed. This page explains how we build to standard and where survey and registration — separate specialisms — fit in.

Classification and commercial compliance

Where the vessel will carry paying guests, we build to Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (BKI) requirements and the relevant commercial-vessel compliance. That governs the scantlings , the safety systems, and the documentation the vessel must carry. Larger vessels may also fall under safety-management requirements; we design to the category the vessel will operate in.

Stability and the inclining test

Stability is calculated at the design stage and verified at completion with an inclining test, which measures the vessel’s actual centre of gravity. The load line marks how deep she may legally be loaded. Together they prove the vessel will stay upright and recover across her real range of loading.

The sea-trial protocol

Before handover the vessel runs a sea trial — typically a few hours that put every major system under load:

  • Main engine and gearbox at cruise and full load; shaft and propeller checked for vibration.
  • Steering gear and rudder response.
  • The rig set and worked, on a sailing or motor-sailer build.
  • Generators, electrical, air-conditioning and the watermaker.
  • Bilge and fire systems, and a check for leaks and vibration under way.

The data is recorded, the snag list is cleared, and the results support certification. Nothing leaves the beach on the strength of a promise.

Safety systems

Fire detection and suppression, life rafts and life jackets stowed for the manifest, clearly marked emergency exits and escape routes, and the required signals and equipment are built and positioned to class — not added as an afterthought.

Registration and survey — separate specialisms

We build to class and complete the sea trial. Flag-state registration is handled through the appropriate national process. Independent pre-delivery or condition survey — a genuinely independent check, which a builder should not mark on its own work — is provided by a dedicated marine surveyor: see independent pre-delivery and condition survey.

Building compliance in, not bolting it on

The cheapest compliant boat is the one designed compliant from the first drawing. Retro-fitting fire systems, escape routes or stability corrections into a finished hull is expensive and compromised. We set the class target at the contract stage so scantlings, systems and safety are right from the keel — which is also why charter-ready vessels are best specified early.

What certification does for an owner

A classed, certified vessel is easier to insure, easier to licence for the charter trade, safer for everyone aboard, and worth more at resale. The certificate is not paperwork for its own sake; it is third-party evidence that the vessel meets a recognised standard — the kind of verifiable proof we believe in, unlike self-assigned ratings.

The clean separation of survey and registration

A builder should not survey its own work, and does not register vessels. Independent condition and pre-delivery survey is a distinct specialism — see independent pre-delivery and condition survey — and flag-state registration runs through its own national process. Keeping these separate is a safeguard for the owner, not an inconvenience.
