Run your hand along a finished phinisi hull and it is smooth — no overlapping steps, just a continuous fair curve. That smoothness is carvel planking, and understanding it explains a lot about how these hulls are built and why they last.
Carvel versus clinker
There are two classic ways to plank a wooden hull. In clinker (or lapstrake) construction the planks overlap like weatherboards. In carvel construction the planks meet edge-to-edge, flush, and the seams between them are caulked to make the hull watertight. Phinisi are carvel-planked: it gives the smooth, fair surface that suits their large displacement hull form and allows the heavy planking a big vessel needs.
Shaping, steaming and bending
A hull is a compound curve, so each plank has to be shaped to fit its place — tapered in width and twisted to lie fair against its neighbours. Planks are steamed to make them supple, then bent onto the hull and fastened while the shape is held. This is skilled, physical work; getting a run of planking to lie sweet is where the Bira shipwrights earn their reputation.
Edge-fastening on a shell-first hull
Here is the distinctive part. In the Bugis method , the planks are edge-fastened to each other — historically with hardwood dowels — to build a self-supporting shell before the frames are fitted inside. The planking defines the shape; the frames are added to a hull that already has its form. It is the reverse of Western frame-first carvel, and it is central to the craft.
Caulking the seams
However carefully planks are fitted, the seams must be sealed. Caulking — driving cotton or fibre into the seams and paying them with a marine sealant — makes the hull watertight and lets the timber work without leaking. Fairing: the invisible skill
Once planked, a hull is faired — planed and sanded to a true, sweet surface with no flats or hollows. Fairing is slow, judged by eye and long battens, and it is much of what separates a fine hull from a rough one. It is also where the master builder’s judgement shows, because a fair hull is felt as much as measured.
Why the method suits big timber hulls
Carvel construction allows the heavy planking a large displacement vessel needs, and its smooth surface suits a hull that will be sheathed and coated below the waterline. Combined with the shell-first sequence , it is the natural method for the phinisi form.
